That cia te "'''ill seem strange to some people who would not begin any important undertaking or tart on a jot1rney either on the thirteenth day of the month, or the clark of the moon , or a Friday. They belong to the class that believe when the ''right. eye itches'' that "some good luck is ncar.'' ''Foul superstition is but a senseless fear of Cocl,' ' and it cannot be my religion nor belief. "Superstition relates to this life, and religion relates to the next; . uperstition i. allied to fatality, religion to virtue; it is by the viv~city of earthly de ire that we become superstition : it is. on the contrary, by the . acrifice of the. c de. ires that we become religious." The thirteenth was never ill-omenecl to me, nor has Friday e,·er brought me mi. fortune. The thirteenth of February, 1912, was a beautifu l morning. ancl pr mptly at 7:10 o'clock, our Oregon Short Line train left Salt Lake City, L'tah, and our journey of thousands of miles began. The ride to Chicago m·cr the L"nion Pacific and the Chicago, :\Tilwaukee and St. Paul Railroad wa. indeed mo. t enjoyable. Every com·cnicncc of well conducted railroads was ours. From 'hicago we traveled via the famous Pennsylvania Limited lo Xcw Y rk City. Tuesday, february 20th, found our party consisting of :\ewell Beeman, J. C. Penney, R swell K. Penney, j. C. Penney, Jr., and the writer, nicely cabined on the Cunarclcr S. S. Page Five |
