Show Laying the Groundwork for Academic-Practice Partnerships: Insights from a Needs Assessment with Nurse-Family Partnership Stakeholders Grace Jordan, BSN, RN; Shawna Sisler, PhD, APRN, CPNP-BC; Carolyn Scheese, DNP, RN Key Take Away Successful implementation of the program hinges on ensuring systemic support, integrating NFP concepts into nursing curricula, and addressing concerns about student interference in nurse-client relationships Background Results • "Models," "Academic-Practice Partnership," and "Barriers" were the most frequently coded themes, indicating their significance in implementation • 104 coded instances of "Models" suggest multiple feasible approaches to academic-practice partnerships • Curriculum integration of NFP concepts identified as critical for practical skill development • Concerns regarding the potential impact of students on nurseclient relationships were consistently reported across all existing programs. • Multiple stakeholder perspectives (students, faculty, NFP leaders) are crucial to inform program development The Nurse-Family Partnership (NFP) is a free program that pairs registered nurses with first-time, low-income mothers for regular home visits from early pregnancy through the child's second birthday. Purpose • Identify specific competencies and skills required for effective implementation of the NFP program utilizing DNP students • Assess the resources and skills needed to implement a training program for nursing students and professionals within the NFP Program • Evaluate the potential benefits of an Academic-Practice Partnership (APP) in enhancing DNP nurse preparation and ongoing development for the NFP program • Develop recommendations for a collaborative APP partnership Conclusions Methods • • • • • Literature review Stakeholder analysis Guided narrative interviews Program Evaluation Qualitative coding analysis • Resource Assessment “What's been crucial is just really good support and buy in from the college… a lot of support from leadership has been huge. My administrator is also our department chair for the nursing school, so she's very in touch with what's happening with the program.” “I think you'd need to make sure you build into your curriculum some basic understanding. There are a lot of schools[that] do talk about nurse family partnership in their curriculum.” “They tell their nurses things that they don't tell their physician, their midwife, or anybody else, because they have built, by the end of it, a 2-and-a-half-year relationship. You really become almost like part of the family. And so, there's a lot of trust.” • Performance metrics and sustainability measures are crucial components for long-term success • Emphasis on systemic support suggests a focus on creating sustainable academic-practice partnerships • Address data gaps (limitations) by including perspectives from stakeholders who were unable to engage. Consider utilizing asynchronous feedback methods. • Develop and test specific protocols to manage student involvement in nurse-client relationships without interference • Explore the most frequently co-occurring themes ("Models" and "Academic-Practice Partnership") and refine implementation strategies based on findings • Utilize NFP concepts across nursing programs to create a comprehensive curriculum integration plan for the APP @uofunursing @utnurseresearch |
