Abstract Conversion of steam generators designed for oil or natural gas firing to firing coal requires a detailed engineering analysis to determine conversion feasibility and required load derating. The amount of derating for a particular unit may depend on pressure part modification as well as coal quality. This paper reviews the impact of the mineral content in coal on conversion of steam generators. Direct firing of coal, as well as alternative approaches such as COM and micronized coal are addressed.
