Description |
Baroque landscape. Herse is a figure in Greek mythology, daughter of Cecrops, sister to Aglauros and Pandrosos. Mercury is a Roman god whose mythology and characteristics match those of the Greek god Hermes. The story of Mercury and Herse is from the Roman poet Ovid's "Metamorphoses" (Book II). His poetry greatly influenced European art and literature. Numerous artists have created paintings, engravings, prints, sculpture and plays depicting characters and locations from "Metamorphoses by Ovid (Publius Ovidius Naso) (43 BC - AD 17 or 18). |
