Show Ambulatory Nurse Residency Program: A Quality Improvement Project Katie Huie Key Findings: New graduate ambulatory care nurses are becoming more popular and require training specific to their specialty. The best way to increase confidence and competence is through simulations and hands-on practice. The ambulatory care nurse residency program lacked practice scenarios. Educators, managers, and nurses were interviewed, and knowledge gaps were identified. Scenarios and simulations were created using INACSL standards and are currently being implemented. Background Results • The number of new graduate nurses entering ambulatory care is increasing, necessitating the need for a nurse residency specific to ambulatory care. Interview Topics 10 • Ambulatory nurse residency programs should include handson practice through simulations or practice activities that increase confidence. • The nurse residency program at Uhealth is being redeveloped, and the lack of practice scenarios has been identified as a gap. 10 • • • • 8 6 4 3 2 0 • A quality improvement project was developed to create simulations and hands-on practice for a newly developed ambulatory nurse residency program. • A nurse resident, an ambulatory manager, and various ambulatory educators at UHealth were interviewed to identify potential learning gaps in new graduate ambulatory nurses. • Simulation standards were identified, and simulations and hands-on activities were created to increase confidence and competence in nurse residents. Critical Thinking Communication (10) Critical thinking (3) Emergency management (3) Triage (2) 3 2 Communication Methods The learning gaps identified from the interview process were separated into four categories and the number of times they were mentioned: Emergency Management Triage Two communication practice activities were created. Critical thinking was divided into four group activities to improve critical thinking. Two simulations using the INASCL standards were created for emergency management specific to outpatient care. A triage practice activity was created, giving nurse residents opportunities to attempt triage with various patient scenarios. Conclusions The simulations and practice scenarios are now present in the ambulatory care nurse residency program and are valuable in increasing the confidence and competence of ambulatory care nurse residents. The practice activities and simulations will be implemented to determine their initial effectiveness, and adjustments will be made to tailor them to the ambulatory care setting. Increased confidence and competence will come because of regular skills practice. COLLEGE OF NURSING |
