Title Improving Contraception Health Literacy for Incarcerated Women
Creator Michelle Teasdale
Subject incarceration; reproductive health; contraception; health literacy; DNP
Description Reproductive health for female inmates is complex and often controversial. Currently, there are over 101,000 women incarcerated in jails across the United States, with seventy-five percent of the population at reproductive age. Many in this population have socioeconomic disadvantages and health disparities that are disproportionate to the general population. As a result, women from this vulnerable population are at higher risk for unplanned pregnancy and pregnancy-related complications. This DNP project aims to improve health disparities for this underserved population by addressing health literacy concerns related to contraception and family planning, increasing access to contraception through a process improvement within the correctional setting, and introducing community resources for continued support after incarceration.
