White Department: Psychology and Ethnic Studies Title: Assistant Professor Your year and degree: I got my doctorate in Experimental Social Psychology in 1993 from Northeastern University What influenced your decision to come to the U? I was hired as the "diversity scholar" for the psychology department, which means that I teach in ethnic studies, as well. I selected this job because of the great opportunities I saw here with my colleagues in social psychology, the department in general, and the University. Did diversity influence your decision? I thought I would have some unique challenges in my teaching and research here in Utah compared to some of the other schools that made me offers. I grew up in a similar environment in southeastern Kentucky and knew that talking about diversity there was hard to do, but needed. I view that as true here on the U's campus, as well. Have you felt welcome at the U? Who or what made you feel welcome? I have felt very welcomed here at the U. I have wonderful colleagues in psychology and in ethnic studies. In addition, I have been able to make connections in other departments through diversity and other research |
