Show NANOS NEWS Blood and Tissue Bank for Study of Giant Cell Arteritis Bradley Katz, MD, PhD, Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Utah, has been named a Dennis W. Jahnigen Scholar by the American Geriatrics Society ( AGS). The award includes a 2- year, $ 200,000 grant to establish a blood and tissue bank at the University of Utah for giant cell arteritis ( GCA). The Jahnigen awards were established by the AGS to encourage academic clinicians to pursue geriatrics- related research projects within their specialties. Grants are awarded in anesthesiology, emergency medicine, general surgery, gynecology, ophthalmology, orthopedics, otolaryngology, physical medicine and rehabilitation, thoracic surgery, and urology ( http:// www. americangeriatrics. org/ hartford/ jahnigen. shtml). n November, 2007, the American Academy of Ophthalmology ( AAO) launched a new educational Web site entitled the Ophthalmic News and Education ( O. N. E.) Network. All existing AAO educational resources are now contained within the O. N. E network. All clinical material has been tagged for search purposes using the powerful SNOMED ( Systemized Nomenclature of MEDicine) system. Thus, AAO members can rapidly search all AAO content for up- to- date clinical patient care information to be used immediately in the office. The same topic searches can be done virtually simultaneously through the PubMed and Google links. The O. N. E. Network also contains a free maintenance of certification ( MOC) study guide with suggested continuing education material based on responses to the included quizzes, varied CME offerings, CME tracking capability, and preferred practice guidelines. Karl Golnik, MD ( Cincinnati, OH) has been appointed Editor- in- Chief of the O. N. E. Network, overseeing an excellent subspecialty editorial board. Andrew Lee, MD ( Iowa City, IA) serves as the neuro- ophthalmology subspecialty editor with a committee comprising Fiona Costello, MD, FRCP ( Calgary, AB) ( deputy editor), Anthony Arnold, MD, ( Los Angeles, CA), Valerie Biousse, MD ( Atlanta, GA), Eric Eggenberger, DO ( East Lansing, MI), Julie Falardeau, MD ( Portland, OR), and Alfredo As part of the Neuro- Ophthalmology Research Disease Investigator Consortium ( NORDIC), Dr. Katz is recruiting collaborators who will provide blood and tissue specimens from patients undergoing temporal artery biopsies for GCA. Both genomics and proteomics will be used to identify disease biomarkers for GCA.
