The Intermountain Symposium on Fossil Hydrocarbons: Proceedings

The purpose of this Symposium is to learn from each other some of the engineering concepts which will unlock the vast treasure of fossil hydrocarbons of the Intermountain West. Perhaps no other material resources in the entire Rocky Mountain region offer challenges and promises to equal those of our fossil hydrocarbon reserves. The promises are of immense energy and of almost unlimited raw materials for petrochemical processing through the use of that energy. The challenges are to recover, to process, and to market these reserves economically, --challenges worthy of the best technology and of the best minds of the day. Brigham Young University was proud to sponsor a symposium dedicated to the proposition that an understanding of the problems associated with fossil hydrocarbon reserves, extraction, physical and chemical conversion, transportation, and use is both vital and timely. It was possible to assemble those who were particularly capable of discussing the various facets. In attendance representatives of many of the industries, professional societies, and university departments which are most vitally concerned. The representation was not large, but was of the very best. All who attended felt the conference was a particularly significant one.
