Report on engineered measures to reduce the salinity differential between the north and south arms of the Great Salt Lake

Procurement and Contract This report fulfills the requirements of the contract between the Utah Department of Natural Resources, Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands (DFFSL), and PSOMAS. Procurement for this contract was handled under requisition number 560-01000000001, FY2000, and the effective dates of the contract are October 1, 1999 through January 8, 2000. Project Specifications The work was completed according to "Specifications to Determine Measures to Reduce the Salinity Differential between the North and South Arms of the Great Salt Lake." These specifications require PSOMAS to work closely with the Department of Natural Resources, and other partners to: 1. Investigate strategies to improve bi-directional flow through the railroad causeway between Promontory Point and Lakeside to reach specified target conditions of a reduced salinity differential between the North and South Arms of the Great Salt Lake; 2. Coordinate with DFFSL and other supporting agencies to verify the science and to pre-design geo technically viable engineering options*; and 3. Determine estimated costs associated with the options. *Note: For this project, pre-design was limited to determining the width, depth, and location of openings in the railroad causeway or other measures to reduce the salinity differential.
