Title An examination of the bioethical and legal dilemmas surrounding genetic editing through narrative and story telling
Date 2022
Description Examining complex topics and issues through narrative and storytelling is a staple of the fiction genre. By presenting abstract problems and ethical dilemmas in a relatable context, and giving examples attached to real characters, the reader becomes emotionally and mentally invested in the issues faced by the actors in the story and gains a better understanding of the underlying concepts. This paper constitutes an exploration of the ethical and legal issues surrounding genetic and genomic editing, and attempts to create a narrative that will allow for the widespread understanding of these issues. As widespread genetic editing, both for therapeutic and enhancement-type use becomes more and more feasible, the importance of public understanding of complex scientific and ethical concepts will increase exponentially. Understanding and becoming adept at efficient communication and education surrounding these concepts is of tantamount important to fostering a well-informed general populace who can contribute to democratic referendums on the matter and inform public policy.
