Show DEVELOPMENT OF IV KETAMINE PROTOCOL Melissa Johnson, BSN, RN, DNP PMHNP Student Dr. Deborah Morgan, DNP, APRN, PMHNP-BC Key Findings: Literature concurs at key points of IV ketamine treatment administration. Consistent emerging standards of practice for IV ketamine administration include, dosing of 0.5-1 mg/kg over 40 minutes at a frequency of 6-8 infusions over the course of 2-3 weeks. Background Results • Depression is a leading global public health concern • Literature supports the implementation of IV ketamine for use in patients with TRD • Treatment-resistant depression (TRD) is an inadequate response to at least two courses of antidepressant treatment • Treatment planning and clinical decision making are essential for successful IV ketamine therapy • TRD comprises 30% of medication-treated major depressive disorders in the U.S. • IV ketamine is a promising adjunctive therapy in the treatment of TRD. • IV ketamine has a rapid and robust efficacy • Standard administration guidelines are lacking and practice is primarily unregulated. Methods • IV ketamine as an adjunctive therapy • The evidence-based framework was key for provider confidence and protocol approval • Participants unanimously felt we addressed potential barriers • Approval of developed IV ketamine protocol Conclusions • Setting: Anderson Wellness Group • The burden of depression is substantial and increasing. • Comprehensive literature search and review • Traditional treatments are often ineffective • Pre-surveys utilized to assess needs and readiness • Emerging science must be safely and effectively translated into evidence-based practice • Evidence-based protocol drafted and education module presented • A DNP PMHNP is an ideal practitioner to implement IV ketamine therapy • Post-surveys utilized to refine protocol • Efforts such as this project bring clarity to the broader scope of incorporating novel treatments • Final protocol presented in an executive summary to key stakeholders • Next step for Anderson Wellness Group is quality improvement-driven implementation COLLEGE OF NURSING |
