Description This learning object is a narrated Power Point presentation describing the features of, risk factors for, and clinical presentations of the John Cunningham, or JC, virus. It includes a discussion of various immunosuppressed states, including HIV, use of natalizumab (a disease-modifying therapy that is used to treat patients with multiple sclerosis), and others, that may predispose to the development of progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML), the clinical neurologic syndrome of the JC virus. Neuro-ophthalmic features of PML, which may include homonymous hemianopia, disorders of higher cortical processing of visual stimuli, cortical blindness, and ocular motility abnormalities, are emphasized.
