Description The Utah Ski and Snowboard Archives is one of the most comprehensive collections in the entire country for research into the history and development of Utah's prospering winter sports industry. The archives document the history of ski competition on local, national, and international levels; the founding of major resorts; snow safety and avalanche control; ski equipment; ski instruction; freestyle skiing; the 10th Mountain Division; back-country skiing; and virtually every facet of winter sports in Utah and the surrounding region. The archives are the repository for the Salt Lake Winter Olympics Games Bid Committee records and the records of the 2002 games themselves.

Description Other recent additions to our world-class collection include: • Barbie Patterson Kallerud Papers that house two scrapbooks pertaining to her years on the U of U Ski Team (1981-82) and on the U.S. Ski Team (1976-79) • Pat Butterfield donated photos of ski great Gretchen Fraser and Sun Valley developer Averell Harriman • Courtney Yamada added a print of the U.S. Ski Team Giant Slalom, Super G Series at Park City • Gary Holt donated photos of the U of U Ski Team • Marv Melville, former Olympian and U of U Ski Team Coach, donated several photos and films that document his racing and Olympic career • Dan Owen donated a photo of Kan and Ada Irvin • David Eccles Quinney added an image of David Quinney on skis • Nancy Young donated photos of the Engen brothers • Ray Solomon donated a ski image • Carolyn Young added 50 slides of skiers • Sara Madsen donated a film of Alta produced in the 1970s • Curtis Oberhansly donated ski posters and a scrapbook documenting skiing in the 1960s • Peter V. Karns contributed U of U Ski learn news clippings and various posters • Michael Joseph Gorrell contributed various ski-related times • The Professional Ski Instructors Association - Intermountain contributed some of its records During the year before the Salt Lake Winter Olympic Games of 2002, the Marriott Library focused attention on the acquisition of monographs covering all phases of skiing, ski history and Olympic history. Several large collections were purchased that enhanced our historical holdings on skiing and the Winter Olympic Games since its inception. In the Western Americana Division of Special Collections books chronicling the Olympic Winter Games in Paris, Berlin, Innsbruck, Lake Placid, Calgary, and Sarajevo were added to the existing collection already acquired detailing the history of the Salt Lake Olympic Winter Games of 2002. In addition, books were purchased and donated on teaching skiing, ski techniques, mountaineering. The Marriott Library holds a wealth of information on skiing and ski history in addition to the one-of-a-kind manuscript and multimedia collections.
