| Description |
The term ""myositis"" can be used for any disorder in which inflammation affects muscle. The inflammation may be confined to a single muscle or may be diffuse. Inflammatory myopathies may be separated into two major categories: myopathies caused by an identified infective agent and idiopathic inflammatory myopathies. Infective myositis may be caused by bacteria, viruses, parasites, or fungi. These organisms and the diseases they produce are discussed in detail in other chapters. It suffices here to describe their effects on the extraocular muscles. |
