Description We attempted to identify retinal ganglion cells undergoing apoptosis, a form of programmed cell death, in an eye of a patient with anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (AION). A 70-year-old right-handed white man woke up with painless loss of vision OS after thromboembolectomy of an aorto-femoral graft. On examination he had reduced acuity, an afferent pupillary defect, an inferior altitudinal field defect, and disk edema, and was diagnosed with AION.
