Show Telepsychiatry: Advancing the Future with Education OBJECTIVES Create and test an intervention that increases prescriber’s intent to use telehealth technology. RESULTS Todd Shorten, BSN, DNP Student University of Utah College of Nursing Measure the impact of the intervention on a sample PURPOSE population. Interpret and analyze results. Present results and recommendations for further Effectively promote the implementation of telepsychiatry at the Veterans Affairs administration through education and demonstration. implementation METHODS Pre and post questionnaires were administered to measure the impact of the intervention. Each questionnaire contained nine questions in a rating scale format with responses ranging from strongly agree to strongly disagree. Three questions were devoted to each of the following categories 1) Perceived usefulness 2) Perceived ease of use and 3) Intent to use telepsychiatry. 1. Perceived ease of use increased by 21.8%. 2. Perceived ease of use increased by 19.2%. 3. Behavioral intention to use telepsychiatry increased by 13.8%. BACKGROUND The VA is widely recognized as the leader in telehealth technologies and is the nation’s largest utilizer of Telehealth (US Department of Veterans Affairs, 2016). The primary form of Telepsychiatry that is utilized at the VA is real-time video conferencing. In 2016, the VA announced the largest expansion of telehealth in the history of the program (US department of Veterans Affairs, 2016). The Salt Lake City VA was designated as 1 of 5 “telehealth hubs” that will receive special funding to increase the size and productivity of telehealth services. In 2015, The use of telemental health at the VA reduced psychiatric inpatient length of stays by 35%. (Slabonkin, 2016). Despite the abundant research about the benefits and efficacy of telehealth, there is little evidence suggesting specific interventions that promote the implementation and utilization of these services (Daniel & Sulmasy, 2015). TECHNOLOGY ACCEPTANCE MODEL 1. External variables influence an individual’s perception of whether a technology is useful or easy to use. 2. Perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use directly affect an individual’s attitudes towards using the technology. 3. Attitudes toward using a technology influence an individual’s intent to use the technology. 4. Intent to use a given technology strongly predicts whether or not that technology will ultimately be used. 4.5 4 3.5 3 2.5 2 1.5 1 0.5 0 Perceptions of Telepsychiatry Perceived Usefulness Perceived Usability Pre Post CONCLUSION Intent to Use The results of the study indicate the intervention is effective at improving attitudes and intent to use telepsychiatry in the sample population. The data suggests that the technology acceptance model is an effective model to promote the implementation of telepsychiatry in the workplace. More research is needed to understand the efficacy of the intervention on a larger scale. |
