Show Improving Medical Documentation through Education Carlie Naval RN, BSN, DNP student, University of Utah College of Nursing PURPOSE (or AIMS) METHODS RESULTS: The goal of this scholarly project is to enhance midwifery provider knowledge of the importance and necessity of complete and defensive documentation, AIMS particularly following an adverse outcome or high risk scenario. • An educational module was created and revised with the input of experts in the field. • Information regarding litigation, documentaion, and imporatnt elements of ceratin high risk scenarios was presented. • The module was presented to healthcare providers and students in the field of obstetrics using a pre and post test for evaluation of the module’s efficacy. PROCEDURES BACKGROUND RESULTS Litigation among nurse midwives is increasing in the United States. Incomplete or missing documentation of a case puts a provider at risk of being proven negligent. Most providers who have had judgments against them did so due to inadequate or incomplete documentation Formal education on documentation has been shown to improve charting practices for resident physicians when compared to those who received no training. • The educational module provides basic resources and information for midwifery providers and students to improve overall quality of documenation. • Pre and post-test questionairre results: Project Chair: Pam Phares, PhD Content Experts: Ann Deneris, PhD Andy Black, PhD |
