Show Cardiac Education Module for Neonatal Nurse Practitioners Jennifer J Mills, BSN, RN, DNP Student, University of Utah College of Nursing EDUCATION PLAN PURPOSE To meet the educational demands of cardiac care, a training module for the NNP will provide the in depth education and skill practice that is requisite for competency METHODS OBJECTIVES • Gather information to determine the knowledge gap between a new graduate NNP and a competent NNP with a strong cardiac background • Outline an education plan • Create a mentorship program • Disseminate the program to interested parties • Cardiac team classes covering pre-post op care, common lesions seen in the NICU, nutrition, pharmacology, common surgical repairs, and discharge planning. • 3 orientation shifts with a member of the cardiac team • Attendance at weekly cath conference, bi-weekly heart center workshop, yearly NNP cardiac conference, yearly Heart Center conference • Attendance at a national cardiac conference every other year. EVALUATION BACKGROUND •In Utah, 1 in every 64 babies is born with a critical congenital heart disease every year. •Newborns less than 37 weeks gestation are admitted to the NICU rather than the CICU •Between 2011-2015, nearly 500 infants were admitted and treated for heart conditions in the NICU associated with the Primary Children’s Heart Center. •Currently there is no specific training program to orient Neonatal Nurse Practitioners (NNP) to the care of these complex infants. GRAPHIC • 6 NNPs were chosen who have interest in cardiac care. • 2 had previous cardiac experience • 2 had were new NNPs within the last 5 years • 2 were new grads or have been working less than 2 years • They read through the module and answered a questionnaire, providing feedback on their view of the efficacy of the project.
