"The Salt Palace was a commercial amusement park at 9th So., between 1'.a.in and State Streets. It was controlled by a stock company and consisted of the "Salt Pa.lace", a bicycle saucer tra ck, and a concession of various types, to attract crowds. It was built during the supn:ner of 1899 at a cost of $ 60,000. "The "Salt !'e.lace" was a spectacul ar buildin1;, the frame work of ..........._ which was covered with large crystals of rock salt, brought mainly fro m Salina, Ut ah. Its rrain building resembled the one at Salte.ir, having two towers and a dome. The inner surface of the dome re presented an evening sky; the outer surface was illuminated with hundreds of electric li ghts. The main feature Lof the interior was a circular dance floor surrrounded by booth concessions of every descriptions. "The bicycle saucer trac k was considered excellent and continued to draw crowds until a fire destroyed the entire resort August 29, lSlO. D?ncing and bicycle races were the Beatures that made the S~lt Palace popular - it was never a childs resort. |
