Show 66 David felt a poke to his shoulder and looking up met the eyes of the German next to Darcy, grinning and yelling across the narrow aisle as though volume might compensate for their language difference. The sounds bounced uselessly off David's thoughts and he leaned back, hoping to escape. But the German followed the retreat. Crouched on his haunches between the seats. Steadied himself against David's knee. "Change," he said now in English, pointing at the cushion he had just left. "Change." "It's okay," said David, understanding at last. "It's okay just like this." "Okay, okay," grinned the German, making insistent lifting motions with his free hand. "Change." David felt a fine spray of spittle hit his face. He would do as the German wanted, he would have done more to keep things pleasant. It was easiest that way. Quickly he shifted to the place beside Darcy. "Asshole," he said to the German, covering his pronouncement with a smile. "Lovers," said the German, first to David and Darcy, then to the other Germans who smiled and pointed, delighted with the show. "You didn't want to sit next to me, did you?" "Darcy, what do you suppose it is that makes them act like that?" "It's true. You can't stand to be near me. Admit it." "Would you say it's because they feel they have to live up to their rotten reputation? Would you say that?" |
