Show Page 61 Chapter 10 Queen Ann on Trial Ann's personal war with the Haley Two Bar had continued during the years of her marriage. Perhaps Ann felt Haley would not retaliate against her because of her relationship with Hi Bernard. In her writings she suggests Bernard had given her evidence Haley had been involved in the murders of Matt Rash and Isom Dart. This evidence may have given Ann a feeling of security in her running battle with Haley. She did not allow for Bill Patton however. After Bernard left the Two Bar, the company struggled along with a series of short-term managers. Then, in 1906, Patton took over Bernard's old job. And Patton was not adverse to fighting back when his interests were threatened, even when his opponent was a woman. Patton even stated publicly that Ann Bassett was "in the way," and that he would get rid of Tom Yarberry even if he had to manufacture false evidence against him.
