Show American Flame Research Committee of the International Flame Research Foundation AFRC Chairman's Remarks Jordan Loftus October 9th, 1984 Welcome to the 65rd Technical Meeting of the American Flame Research Committee. This Symposium fulfills one of the basic objectives of American Flame Research Committee which is to provide a forum on Applied Combustion Research and Technology in America. My special thanks to your Chairman Richard T. Waibel, Deputy Chairman John Cegielski and Coordinator Judy Griffith and to John Zink Company for organizing and conducting this Symposium. For those among us whose organizations are not members of the American Flame Research Committee or their respective National Committee, I urge you to recommend joining to your management. A membership application follows. We need the collective wisdom of the American Professional Combustion Community to solve the problems confronting us. The International Flame Research Foundation is an unique expression of international cooperation in the field of Applied Combustion. Its professional staff at its IJmuiden, Netherlands research station is made up of ten nationalities. Its operating budget is 70 percent from contracts and 30 percent from National Committees and Associate Members fees. Contractual work is from EEC entities, U.S. government agencies and private companies. Since contractual work is focused on the current need of the client, members contributions are very important to realize the long term objectives of International Flame Research Foundation. These include but are not limited to: 1. Characterisation of coals 2. Characterisation of sorbent performance 3. Near Field Aerodynamics of burners 4. Combustion of "off-specs' fuels Membership in the International Flame Research Foundation is by joining one of nine National Committees: France, United Kingdom, Netherlands, Germany, America, Italy, Japan, Sweden, Finland. The International Flame Research Foundation also has two Associate Members in India and Israel. Multi-national organizations join several National Committees depending on the nature and local of their combustion programs. International Flame Research Foundation reports are confidential to members. While most of the work is eventually published in the open literature, it is always in an abridged form.
