Show -7- linoleum, through the front room to Little Twirp's bed. There they attempted to wake him by pulling themselves up on their hind feet and tugging at the bed clothes. He always greeted them with, "hi, you rascals." He romped with them as if they were puppies. The badgers played with our dog, Brownie, too. Sometimes the four of them would roughhouse together on the lawn. At times, if they felt threatened when a strange man or dog came around, the natural instinct to protect themselves would surface and they would crouch down, bare their teeth and hiss like a snake. Needless to say the intruder would depart rapidly. True to their nature they took to digging right from the first. There were numerous badger holes all over our place, it was amazing to watch them work as they could be underground in a matter of a few seconds, digging with their long front claws and flinging the dirt back with their hind feet. They were like two little boys digging in the yard seeming to challenge each other on which could dig himself underground first. People who walked onto our place were astonished to see those two animals running around looking like wide, flat doormats on legs. "what are they?" many asked in astonishment. une morning Dad came into the house and announced, "Come with me if you want to see something funny." He led us out to the granary where he opened the door and we followed him inside. There lay Pet and Pal on their backs, like two inverted doormats, groaning in misery.
