Show One day in September, after I had started back to school, I was up my tree, taking in the view. My father came home early. He stood on the back porch and whistled for me. When I did not respond, he headed straight for the tree. "We've made it," he said, staring up at me. "I sold a group insurance policy to a very large manufacturer today with thousands of employees. We're not rich, but we will be. Not only that, but mommy's pregnant, and I've got a surprise for you, a big one." That got me out of the tree. On the kitchen table was a cage. Inside it was a silvery mammal that I had never seen before. Mother was staring at it, fascinated. "What's that?" "Chinchillas," father said, beaming. I took a closer look. "Be careful," mother said, "it bites." |
