Show "It might be Mama," I said. "Didn't she say she would call and check on us?" "I don't remember ," Kelly said. "Answer it." And she handed me the phone. "Mama?" I said. No answer. "Mama, please be there. And if you aren't Mama then please be Papa just trying to scare us 'cause we ate up most of the fig newtons. Please don't be a real werewolf 'cause we're already in trouble. Jeffrey wet on the couch and my arms don't hardly work anymore." There was silence and then a growl that changed into a long howl. "I can't answer that phone anymore," I wanted to say, but I was too scared for my mouth to work, either. "If that werewolf knows our phone number does that mean he knows our address, too?" Kelly said. "Turn out the light," I said, hanging up the phone, "and help me move this sofa in front of the door. If that werewolf does come in here he won't think to turn on the light and he'll fall over the furniture. It took us ten minutes to move the sofa. Then we went back up stairs and hid under the bed. We hadn't hardly got settled again when we heard the door handle shaking downstairs and we knew that he had come for us. Kelly screamed loud and shrill. My little scream was pretty -11- |
