Show City Motel 121 By nighttime, Eva had sold her scrimshaw brooch that had been handed down from a maritime ancestor. While Harold watched Monday Night Football, she made some calculations, checked their food supplies and her bank that she had made out of a Clorox b o t t le where she kept her pin money. She had made t h i s piggy bank by gluing pink f e l t ears on the sides, black eyes on both sides of the handle, a pink snout over the cap, and by cutting a slot in the top. "Harold," she said in a gentle voice after he switched off the game, " l e t ' s travel before we are too decrepit to enjoy the world." "Us?" he asked, stroking his cheek which hadn't been shaved for a few days. She shook her head, her lips tight with excitement. "Where would we get the money? You know how things are." " I ' v e got $200 in my savings," she said proudly. Harold blinked his eyes in admiration. "And look at t h i s . " She held up the gasoline credit card between her thumb and forefinger. "From Angus and June." Her cheeks had never been so pink with excitement, " u n t i l i t expires." "Oh, I get i t , " Harold grumbled. "Rolling wheels for two old heels," and he sat dejectedly in his armchair. "Harold, opportunity is knocking. Can't you hear i t ?" "You know, I hadn't thought of i t , " he said, suddenly perking up, "but maybe t h i s is the only thing to do-run. What the h e l l . " Harold had never sworn when he was an agrarian gentleman. "I've got $120 from my mall job." "What mall job?" Eva asked with a shadow across her pink face. She was used to knowing everything about Harold. |
