Show 123 jarred him from a dream. Down an imagined corridor he had heard Nick mumble, something about breakfast, something about a goddamn priest. Steven sat up involuntarily, could feel sunlight on his face. He waited for Sara to speak again. "No, you can get your own goddamn breakfast." Then came Nick's voice, booming now, and menacing. Nick provoked, Nick ready to do battle. Steven heard the word bitch, heard it smack on the wall, and when he heard the sound of small bare feet hitting the floor he realized he was frightened, for Sara, for himself, for any friend of Nick's. Steven had pulled the blankets tight to his chin and opened wide his eyes, to the morning, and Sara, running naked past his half-open door, her small breasts heaving, face contorted, running to the bathroom where she slammed shut the door and was silent. "Listen, Mary Magdalene," Nick bellowed after her, "when I want religion I'll go have a solemn drink with Enrique, okay." Steven sank back down into bed. Still, he listened. He heard Nick shuffling around in their bedroom, mumbling, getting dressed maybe. Then he heard Nick stomping around in the front room, the kitchen, opening and closing drawers, loudly shifting things in the icebox, banging the cupboard doors. Banging on the bathroom door. "Hey, open up." "Go to hell." "There's no food in this house, open up." "Why?" |
