Show A Year of New Beginnings Barbara Gilmour, Margaret Landesman, Ashley Farmer excited for the opening weekend! In recent years, it had become apparent that the climate control system built into the UMFA structure while fine for protecting the art was extracting a great toll on the building itself. The decision made to fix this, which entailed closing UMFA to the public from January 2016 through August 2017, would be both time consuming and costly. During the closure, docents and staff were busy keeping the home fires burning. Monthly training sessions featured best practices information about effective touring strategies well as specific research regarding the exciting changes taking place within the galleries. While museum staff focused on "reimagining" UMFA as a cutting edge 21st century institution, docent daily teams maintained continuity by creating their own unique opportunities for social engagement and learning. It was a challenging, but stimulating time! |
