Show "Simon Says" Technique for Nonorganic Visual Field Constriction Devin D. Mackay, M.D. Director of Neuro-Ophthalmology, Assistant Clinical Professor of Neurology, Ophthalmology, and Neurosurgery Indiana University School of Medicine #12;Simon Says • For patients who claim a small central visual field • Examiner claims to be doing a neurologic examination (i.e., not testing vision) • Examiner holds both hands up outside of the patient's central 30 degrees of vision • Examiner begins with verbal commands such as "open and close your hands" and "show me a thumbs up" while the examiner also does these actions #12;Simon Says • Then, after a few verbal commands, the examiner casually says "do this" without a verbal command, and shows two fingers, or some other sign • The patient has to rely on peripheral vision to perceive the command and proves some intact peripheral vision if the patient can follow the command |
