Description Since man's appearance on the Earth, each individual has had to face the fact that he would inevitably die. Understandably, throughout time man has often sought to counter the aging process and even to avoid death. Today with advancing technologies that promise results in our quest for longer life, the search for the proverbial fountain of youth is proceeding more fervently than ever. Also, with the increasing average life expectancy that our population is experiencing, we seek not only to defy death, but to counter the aging process in an effort to sustain in old age the quality of life that we enjoyed at earlier ages. The motto of gerontologists reflects this commonly-felt desire: "To add years to life and life to years" (Timiras 1988).
