Abstract NKK Corporation in collaboration with Nippon Furnace Kogyo Kaisha, LTD. have developed HRS (high-cycle regenerative burner heating system) . The newly developed HRS i s equipped with a honeycomb regenerator. A honeycomb regenerator has advantages in compactness, thermal response and heat exchange efficiency over a conventional ball regenerator. NOx emission from the burner is 40ppm (@ 11% oxygen concentration) at preheated air temperature 1570K. This was achieved by applying fuel staged combustion and optimized burner hardware design. NKK Corporation has introduced HRS into No. 1 Hot Strip Mill reheating furnace in Fukuyama Works. The introduction of an all-regenerative-burner reheating furnace into a large scale hot strip mill process is the first trial in the steel making industry in Japan. The newly constructed reheating furnace has a heating capacity of 230 tons of slab per hour and it has 76 regenerative burners. Energy saving of the new furnace is 25%, and reduction of NOx emission is 60% compared with the replaced furnace. This newly developed regenerative burne heating system contributes not only to the efficient use of energy but also to the reduction of C02 /NOx emission. This paper describes the R&D work and gives an example of HRS application to a large scale slab-reheating furnace.
