Title Project for integrative refugee writing programs
Creator Schembri, Brandon
Subject Refugees; Writing Program
Description This paper entails the summation of research, development and procedures of community partnerships, workshop facilitation, and sustainability procedures of three refugee writing programs in Salt Lake City, Utah. It introduces reasons for taking on the project, which includes partnering with SLCC Community Writing Center and helping them reach out to the refugee population. Procedurally, the paper outlines specific research that lead to the creation of the partnerships with the New American Academic Network (NAAN), Refugee Services at Asian Association, and Catholic Community Services (CCS). From these three organizations came a Memoir writing group, a workshop series focusing on academic writing, and a resume building workshop each tailored to the needs of the organization and the refugee population they serve. In total, 86 refugees of varying English abilities were tutored and coached over a 8 month period through writing groups, workshops, and coaching sessions. Within a month, the said programs will be handed over to the CWC for continuation and further implementation. Overall the project has benefited many people, and has expanded the outreach of the CWC. Refugees are now, if even in a small way, are equipped with writing skills that will serve them and their children in a globalized society.
