Show (Your Visit, p. 2) (-stanza break-) We will eat dinner, the new linen tablecloth gleaming under the small circles of our plates, and you'll swirl the wine until warm. :Jhen it becomes dark, I will turn on the houselights, though I know you prefer candies, then present the stone vase covered by cloth, the way a cowl protects the head. Wearing a bulky jacket and long scarf, you will slip it into the backseat of your car and return down, the road behind bright ropes of headlights, as I stand in an untucked shirt by the splintered door. What matters is not so much the story of our meeting, but why we do twice each year, and for six months you will own the ashes of our father. |
