Title Critiquing vedanta using the Philosophical Investigations of Ludwig Wittgenstein
Date 1990-12
Year graduated 1990
Description From the earliest times, language has been used in connection with magic. In Genesis, words are accorded creative power; Adam but says the names of animals and they spring into being. God said, "Let there be light"; and there was light. In the ancient world, there was a mystical connection between a name and its object, and to know a person's name was to have power over him. Pronouncing a name was like invoking a power that could be used not only in prayer, but in curses as well. Language was the vehicle of prayer, and of casting spells.
