Show BLIND BEGGAR AT THE GARE DU NORD With what expectations? Clearly, you delight in my secret ways: but the world in which I keep vigil is a world you could not even lie down in. Still, it amazes you, the way the hoar-frost crackles beneath my jackboots when I pace back and forth on the boards, or the way I'll stand on the furnace grates, the coal smoke, thick coils of it, rising around me enough to choke an average man, or the way the zig-zagging channel of air that blows in off the cinder-banks does not even move me yet takes you, like a cold hand, around the throat. But even more, it is the silence and space that surround me, and the way my steel-tipped cane clatters down the runway, -as though I were eternity itself! all gray and merging with the crowd.
