Description Photo shows "Redbud Canyon," Nevills' name for a grotto with natural springs, a good place to camp and replenish water supply. It was located above the San Juan River, Mile 8 above the confluence with the Colorado. A description of the place from Gaylord : "Redbud Canyon" is / was on the San Juan at Mile 8L from the confluence. Not a canyon as such, but more a grotto, somewhat like the back wall of Music Temple. A notch in the riverside cliff, maybe a hundred feet off the river, and lined at the back by a horizontal seam with a seep and maidenhair fern (and columbine I think). At the foot of the wall was a pool - not a plunge pool as in Music Temple, but just a collecting of the seep water, which trickled out into the river through a slot in a bouldered dirt-bank. There was a cluster of really robust Redbud trees growing around the pool. "From the river it wasn't obvious as a grotto, and the "mouth" just looked like boulders and a dirt bank. We almost always filled our canteens there, after being so long without any good water stops coming through Paiute Farms. To get into Redbud we had to climb up and over, down into the grotto. It wasn't an easy water stop, but the water was absolutely superb, and the grotto was in shade all day."
