The strangers dropped the wine in crash and splatter! They could not find the door! They screamed: and fell. The snake then, rippling to my father's call how smoothly, meekly crossed the cluttered spaces, went back to its dark room to suck tomatoes. My father does not know I heard and watched; he thought I was asleep. But in the night I crept into that place to soothe and pet the waxy pearl black snake. Curled so, together, we held each other in cool, sinuous touch. |
