Title Breaking the glass ceiling: The compatability of women and leadership
Date 1995-06
Year graduated 1995
Description Women have faced a history of battling for equality with men in the accounting profession, starting with just being allowed to work ill the beginning, to todays attempts to "break the glass ceiling." Today's battles are fought in the boardrooms and the courtrooms by people who believe in the quality and the equality of women in accounting. The truth remains that women and men are different, but tired stereotypes and myths no longer belong in the work place. Women possess the skills and the know-how to succeed at the partnership level, now all that is necessary is the opportunity. The purpose of this thesis is to examine the issues women face in accounting. With women representing over one-half of accounting graduates, women should be more represented in public accounting firms. Research shows that women comprise but 5% of partners in the international firms. Although the numbers are increasing, some of the discriminatory attitudes of the promotion process are stagnant. The accounting profession has been dominated by men since the beginning. Women are becoming more prominent ill the profession with the help of professional organizations and true supporters. By instigating programs, such as mentoring and family friendly policies, businesses will provide an environment more suitable for women and men. By making people aware of the behavior in the work force, women will be taken more seriously, discrimination will decrease, and the glass ceiling will shatter.
