Show Nocturne/ 17 After Anika gave report that morning, she remembered that no one bet on Summer Smith. No one won the lottery. The subject of the lottery did not come up again. She knew it could not come up again with a group of nurses that lost two patients in one night. They were not interested in losing any more. The charge nurse gave management a copy of both code reports. They did not find any errors. Death certificates were issued. No lawsuits were filed. The next night on the shift, the nurses hid grief and fatigue behind their masks. The management allowed Sydney and Carolyn to miss the shift for the rest of the week. No one talked about Summer Smith or Mark Grover. When Carolyn returned days later, she waited for management to approach her. But they never came. She ate four cupcakes, nervously peeling back the wax wrappers. When she passed the room where Mark Grover died, she paused in the doorway. She thought of his dead body and felt her bad luck. Then she made her way back through the quiet hallway to check other pulses. |
