Mailboxes, fences and other yard art assembled using old wagon wheels, plows, or other farm implements eloquently express regional identity. Outdoor barbecues, rock fences, rock gardens and colorful fireplaces are fashioned with stones gathered from our mountains and deserts. Utahns are also known for their strong tradition of flower gardens-a legacy from pioneer times when every home had a family orchard, vegetable garden and flower garden. Many gardens still abound in old-time varieties of bush roses, peonies, flags and lilacs. Although not as pervasive as the crafts, the traditional music and dance of Utah's Anglo-pioneer heritage are still alive, especially in rural Utah. In a number of small towns, community orchestras and bands still provide music for dances and other special occasions. Musicians who learned to play by ear, and who have often inherited their places in the town bands or orchestras from their parents, play a repertory of old-time dance tunes that date back at least fifty years.
