Title Using science fairs to enhance science education
Date 1994-12
Year graduated 1994
Description Too many people perceive science as dull, boring, or otherwise unimportant in their lives. Further, scores of elementary school teachers fear science education in the United States. Utah is particularly burdened with a high ratio of children compared with other states. To assist both educators and students in the quest to improve science education, science fairs should be implemented in elementary schools. Several elementary school science fairs during the 1993-1994 year are discussed, coupled with suggestions for an ideal science fair. My work exploring science fairs as a supplement to the science education problem is covered in detail. This includes preliminary science education studies, involvement with The Center for Integrated Science Education, and a pilot science fair at Nibley Park Elementary School, Salt Lake City, Utah.
