Description Condition excellent good fair deteriorated __JL/ruins unexposed Check one unaltered j^altered Check one _i/original site moved date Describe the present and original (if known) physical appearance Internal Composition Thirteen features (F-2 through 14) were identified during a survey of the Soldier Creek Kilns area (Fig. 1). Features 2 through 5 are remnants of circular charcoal kilns in varying stages of deterioration. Feature 2, best preserved of the 4, is in the^hace^i^^beehive. Features 2 and 3 contain a br ick archway at their base JHHJHIIF T^e archway of feature 3 measures 4'9" high X 5'1" wide and is inEnesnape of a beehive. The kilns are constructed of stpne". Interior and exterior surfaces are plastered with a hard white mortar. The ^nterior surface is coated with carbon. Three by four inch square ports are placed in the kiln walls approximately I 1 3" above the present ground surface and spaced 3' to 3'6" apart. The interior diameters of the kilns measure: feature Feature Feature Feature 2 3 4 5 13'6" 17'7" 25'5" 24' Feature 6 is another kiln. It may possibly be a lime kiln as the interior is partially faced with a white substance, Jfoeexterior of feature 6 forms a square abutting the slope of the canyon ffjjfjifi Exterior dimensions are approximately 13'2" X 9'3 W . A Circular cavn^Torms the interior of feature 6 with interior walls sloping outwards toward the base. The interior cavity measures approxmiately 6' in diameter. Feature 6 is constructed of stone with a soft red clay mortar. An opening, 2' X 2' at the base of feature 6 faces Feature 7 is a rectangular outline of stones, probably a structure foundation. Feature 7 measures 30'6" X 20'6". Pieces of iron sheeting and window glass were noted within the interior of Feature 7. Feature 10 is an "L" shaped alignment of rock measuring 20'X 10'. Feature 10 may be the remnant of a structure foundation. |
