Description | According to a Smith family member, the house was purchased by Richard and Janyce Smith in 1971 after they spotted in passing through town on the way from Alaska to California and learned if the house wasn't sold soon that Dick Painter would tear it down to expand his car dealership. After an unsuccessful attempt to start a business as a radio technician, the Smith family was forced to move to Salt Lake City and attempted to rent out the mansion, but certain clauses in the sales agreement with Dick Painter made it difficult. The house was broken into and some lighting fixtures and other fittings were removed. The Smith family ended up having to turn the property back over to Dick Painter in 1973 or 1974. |
