Description Dr Varner received his medical degree from the University of Minnesota. Dr Varner joined the Department in 1987 and currently serves as Professor and Vice-Chair for Research. Dr Varner developed and directs the Obstetrics and Gynecology Research Network, a consortium of over 50 research personnel who conduct and administer the many clinical trial networks - both obstetric and gynecologic - in which the Department participates. The Network currently conducts NIH-funded clinical trials in hospitals and offices of women's health providers along the northern Utah urban corridor. Dr Varner currently serves as the Principal Investigator for the Maternal-Fetal Medicine Units Network Utah site, is a co-investigator on three others and is a mentor/collaborator on a number of individual and institutional training grants. Dr Varner major interest lies in clinical trials and research administration. In addition to his Departmental obligations, Dr Varner is the Co-Director of the Clinical Genetics Institute and Director of Perinatal Research for Intermountain Healthcare, the Associate Director for Women's Health Research of the University's Center for Clinical and Translational Sciences (CTSA award), the Co-Director of the University's Institute for Women's and Children's Health Research, and the Interim Director of the University's Personalized Healthcare Program. Along with his wife, Kathleen Digre MD, Dr Varner was the 2012 co-recipient of the University of Utah Rosenblatt Prize, the University's highest honor in recognition of excellence in teaching, research and administrative efforts.
