Abstract Alzeta has improved the performance of the Pyromat cylindrical burner, originally developed as a 30 ppm NOx burner for oil field steamers, by combining the advanced Radiation Stabilized Burner (RSB) technology with Flue Gas Recirculation(FGR). The advantage of combining the two technologies is that the burner maintains a broad stable operating range, resulting in a boiler or process heater that gives stable operation, low emissions, and high efficiency. A full-scale demonstration of the combined technology burner occurred in a 62.5 MMBtu/hr oil field steamer at Chevron field site near Bakersfield, CA, USA. Results show a burner that operates below 3% stack 02, and maintains NOx levels below 9 ppm and CO levels less than 50 ppm (both corrected to 3% stack 02). Modeling results of these field tests agree well with the experimental data, and the models will now be used to design combustion systems for future industrial boiler field installations.
