Abstract This paper summarizes the design application and results of a two year programme formulated primarily to investigate the effects of high technology burners employing discrete Flue Gas Recirculation on NOx emission in a full scale plant rather than a small scale test rig. A multi burner dual fuel 45 M Watt boiler was made available and testing carried out whilst the unit was on commercial load and manned by normal operations staff. Total testing did not consume two years actual work, but was necessarily prolonged due to local conditions and the load demands of the company owning the plant in question. Opportunity was also taken to quantify the effects on NOx and other pollutents resulting from changes in nozzle geometry, dual fuel firing, off stoichiometric and biased combustion and eventually all variable parameters simultaneously. Results indicated that discrete flue gas recirculation and nozzle geometry had a significant effect on NOx production with reductions of up to 53% on base line figures. No operational problems were encountered.
