Content Description +/-
This collection consists of issues of the Update published in paper-format between 1975 and 2004 by Westminster College, Salt Lake City, Utah. Beginning January 2004, the Update was published solely online.
The Westminster College Update was created in 1975 as a newsletter for the Westminster faculty and staff, and in the later issues for the entire Westminster community. Only three issues from 1975 have been located and it is unknown whether the newsletter continued its publication during the years between the December 1975 issue and the sudden reappearance of the Update in January 1985, possibly due to new management in the Communications Office. The first issue does not contain information regarding its creation, which may suggest that there are previous records in existence. No explanation as to the sudden publication in 1985 is given, though issues continue regularly, on a weekly or bi-monthly basis depending on time of year. In January 2004 the Update began to be published solely online, and in March 2004 under the direction of Michael Scott in the Communications Office. Online issues are now published on a monthly basis.
The content of the Update is typically informal and brief, containing only small paragraphs of pertinent information about campus activities, financial status, faculty and staff news and community events. Over time the Update began to develop regular columns and sections such as "News and Notes" (a section of miscellaneous announcements) and "When Where What" (a list of weekly activities). Beginning in 1996 a monthly schedule was printed for the convenience of readers. Brief biographies and backgrounds for upcoming speakers and events are highlighted within the newsletters. The newsletters also frequently address problems with the technology or logistics around campus.
Originally, the Update was simply a typed news release printed on tan legal paper. On March 8, 1993, after the publication had become more established, it was reformatted and produced on official Westminster College letter head. Finally, after having been temporarily printed on regular computer paper from January 6, 1997 to February 3, 1997, the Westminster College Update took on a new layout. On February 18, 1997 the new format was released along with a few innovative changes. For example, the Update became a bimonthly publication rather than weekly, the new issues include pictures and designed formats; several regular columns were added, including "What's Happening" (a replacement of "When Where What"), "The Human Resources Corner" (information regarding the Human Resources Office) and "The Stock Exchange" (a personal letter from former college president Peggy Stock).
Gaps in the collection: Aside from the sparse collection of newsletters published in 1975, there is no evidence of resumption of publication until 1985. It is possible that some records have yet to be uncovered, or that the newsletter was not published during that timeframe. After the newsletter resumed in 1985 there do not appear to be any irregular gaps in publication other than "slow periods" such as summer and mid-winter vacations and days on which the campus was closed. There are several online versions of the Update that appear to be used as templates for the following months and therefore do not have separate heading in the archives, these issues include: February and May 2004, and January 2005.
Online versions of the Update can be found on the Office of Communications website. The newest issue is displayed within the "College publications" section, and 14 historical issues, published between January 2010 and November 2011 in the subsection "Westminster Update". The first 2 electronic issues (January and February 2010) are titled Update. Since the March 2010 issue, masthead reads "Westminster, Salt Lake City, Utah" on the left, and "Electronic newsletter" on the right, thus a title change to Westminster electronic newsletter can be extrapolated.
