BOYLE, EDITOR. <br><br> TO THE TEACHERS IN NATIONAL COUNCIL. <br> Copies of the July number of the Utah Evangelist will be distributed among the teachers at the National Association of Teachers, at Madison, Wis. We invite the attention of our fellow teachers to the following facts: <br> 1. The Mormon question is one of growing importance, and it is therefore the duty of every American teacher, to he well informed in regard to it. <br> 2. The conflict now going on in Utah, and surrounding Territories, is of a National character, and all must sooner or later, be interested in it. <br> 3. THE UTAH EVANGELIST will endeavor, in its own quiet way, to be a bold defender of the American Constitution. It will in each number publish some article of the Mormon faith, as found in their own authorized writings, and endeavor to keep its readers informed as to the nature and progress of the conflict going on between truth and error, in these mountain regions. <br><br> POLYGAMY ON THE DECREASE? <br> Among the secret polygamous marriages that have taken place during the year, and which have but recently come to light, are the following: John Taylor, the President of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, has taken unto himself the rich widow, Mrs. Barratt. It was not so much a matter of personal charms as it was financial attractions on the part of the blushing bride, that brought about this romantic marriage. <br> Joseph F. Smith, one of the twelve apostles, has taken another wife, for celestial purposes only, at least so Joseph says. John Morgan, residing on Sixth East, between Third and Fourth South Streets, took a second wife some time ago. Morgan has kept the matter very quiet, but it has leaked [out] on him. These three cases being recent ones, and considering that polygamy is on the decrease, it might be a good thing for the Grand Jury to make an example of these three criminals. - Salt Lake Tribune*. <br><br> JOSEPH THE .SEER. <br> [Mormon Hymn Book, edition of 1854.] <br> 1. The Seer, the Seer, Joseph the Seer- <br> I'll sing of the prophet, ever dear; <br> His equal now cannot be found <br> By searching the wide world around. <br> With gods he soared in the realms of day, <br> And men he taught the heavenly way. <br> The earthly Seer! the heavenly Seer! <br> I love to dwell on his memory dear; <br> The chosen of God, and the friend of man, <br> He brought the Priesthood back again; <br> He gazed on the past, on the present too, <br> And opened the heavenly world to view. <br><br> 2. Of noble seed, of heavenly birth, <br> He came to bless the Sons of earth; <br> With keys by the Almighty given, <br> He opened the full, rich stores of heaven; <br> O'er the world that was wrapped in sable night, <br> Like the sun, he spread his golden light. <br> He strove, 0, how he Strove to stay <br> The stream of crime in its reckless way; <br> With a mighty mind and a noble aim, <br> He urged the wayward to reclaim; <br> ‘Mid the foaming billows of angry strife, <br> He stood at the helm of the ship of life. <br><br> 3. The Saints, the Saints, his only pride; <br> For them he lived, for them he died! <br> Their joys were his, their sorrows too, <br> He loved the Saints, he loved Nauvoo! <br> Unchanged in death, with a Saviour's love <br> He pleads their cause in the courts above. <br> The Seer, the Seer! Joseph, the Seer! <br> O, how I love his memory dear; <br> The just and wise, the pure and free, <br> A father he was, and is, to me; <br> Let fiends now rage in their dark hour- <br> No matter, he is beyond their power. <br><br> 4. He's free! he's free! the Prophet's free! <br> He is where he will ever be, <br> Beyond the reach of mobs and strife, <br> He rests unharmed in endless life; <br> His home's in the sky, he dwells with the gods, <br> Far from the furious rage of mobs. <br> He died! he died for those he loved; <br> He reigns, he reigns in the realms above; <br> He waits with the just who have gone before, <br> To welcome the Saints to Zion's shore. <br> Shout, shout, ye Saints! this boon is given- <br> We'll meet our martyred Seer in heaven. <br><br> The article on Dwarfs in this issue is by Miss M. E. Paine, Superintendent of the Baptist school. We hope hereafter to continue the Temperance Column* by Miss Paine, which has been crowded out for the last two months by press of other matter. <br><br> A MORMON BLESSING <br> A patriarchal blessing given by Charles W. Hyde for Hans Christen Jensen, the son of Jens and Sophia Petersen, born in Denmark, September 6th, 1813: <br> Hans, the beloved of the Father: I am laying my hands upon your hand [head?] to seal a Father's blessing upon you. You shall have wisdom, and knowledge, and power from the Father to understand the many things which belong to this Kingdom of God on the earth. You shall preach the gospel in your own native country, and bring home thousands of people to Zion with eternal rejoicings. You shall have great faith and do many great miracles in the name of Jesus Christ; you shall have power to confound your enemies; you shall heal the lame and afflicted, and there on their sick beds shall they rejoice over thee, and thou shalt prosper in all thy undertakings in righteousness. Thou art of Ephraim, a lawful heir to the Priesthood, and with wives in the great Kingdom upon the Earth*, your inheritence [sic] shall be beautiful with all manner of fruits. And in Zion this shall be for thy good, and lean upon the arm of Jehovah, and he will open every door for thy good, and thy kindred shall come to thee like doves to their windows. And this promise I seal upon your head; and with the promise of long life, inasmuch as you lean upon the Lord thy God, until your hair shall be white as wool; and you shall converse with your Redemer [sic] and many of the holy prophets since the world began. <br> This promise I now seal upon your head, to stand upon the earth in the coming of the Messiah. Therefore, marvel not, all power is with God. These blessings I now seal upon your head with glory, honor, and dominion, and with eternal life in the Kingdom of God, now and forever. Amen. <br> APOSTLE CHARLES W. HYDE. [Recorded in Book F, page 61.] <br><br> Married.-On Thursday, the 3d inst., at the residence of the bride's mother, by Rev. Dr. McNiece, Anna Louise, daughter of the late Major Critchlow, to Dr. F. S. Bascom. <br> Dr. Bascom has concluded to make Salt Lake City his future home, and has opened his office on Main street, over Alff's crockery store. The Doctor is a graduate from Rush College, has been in the Government service and has a large experience in the hospitals of Vienna. <br><br> Joseph F. Smith is said to have taken a fresh wife just after the passage of the Edmund's Bill, for whom he built a new house, and whom he called his "Edmund's wife." <br><br><br> * phrases and titles are italicized, including "and with wives in the great Kingdom upon the Earth" <br><br> |
