Show October 10, 1975 This inaugu ral exhib ition of Watercolor Sout hwest, spo nsored by the New Mexico Watercolor Society, clearly outlines the potential future both in character and importance of an annua l comprehensive regiona l exhibit. The exhibition brings together vital and expressive works of artists from Texas, Arizona and New Mexico The paintings do reflect a regional spirit but at the same time belong to the growing expression of watercolor in the United States. Your jury of selection and awards made their judgments dependent upon colored slides submit ted by the artists. It is difficult to be positive in judgment of slides that are not always faithful to the original works. After carefully viewing 332 sl ides, we arriVed at our cho ices through several considerat ions. Some paintings had a freshness and vitality in their paint quality, others a spark of imagination and still others a certain mood quality. While many of the paintings captured the environment, there were those that had a certain mystique in their cha racter ization . And finally it is that indescribable element that established the prize winners and the selection of the show. Congratulations to the Western Federation of Watercolor Societies on this, their first exhibition. |
